Dairy industry in desert- Islamic republic of Mauritania

Project obejective

  • Set up a plant for the production of UHT sterilised and pasteurised milk, yoghurt and butter, according to high-quality health and environmental standard specifications, using sophisticated technologies; and
  • Collect and process milk, using refrigerated storage technologies, and improve the living conditions of livestock breeders and encourage them to improve the quality of their dairy production.

Project justification:


  • The amounts of fresh milk produced in Mauritania are not fully optimised or utilised;
  • The dairy plants currently existing are old. A new dairy plant is therefore needed;
  • The Mauritanian government is interested in and supports the development of the dairy industries; and
  • Mauritania’s dairy imports are high.

Project Description

This project is based upon the idea that milk will be collected from livestock breeders in order to be stored in special refrigeration centres and then be transported to the dairy plant in Nema, where it will be processed in order to manufacture various dairy products.

Site of the Project

The project is proposed to be located on the main road about 1 km in Nema, with dairy collection centres being proposed to be set up in Werken ,bangue and chaamiya, which are 60 km 80 km and 75 km respectively from the dairy plant in Nema. These three cities have abundant number of cattle.

Project Capacity

This project will operate at an per day 30000 liter production capacity , Using advanced technologies, this project will produce UHT sterilised and pasteurised milk, yoghurt and butter.

Project Components

  • Three milk collection centres, with the capacity of each being 10,000 litres a day, in order to meet the dairy plant's daily needs for milk;
  • Two sterilisation line, which will operate using  and tetra-pack ; 250 ml and 500 ml pack,
  • Pasteurisation and packaging line;
  • Yoghurt processing and form-seal packaging line; and
  • Butter processing unit

Present Status of the Project


  • Project handover to Mauritania government in fabury 2017. Currently Mauritanian government Run this plant very smoothly.UHT milk dispatch to all over in Mauritania.
